Heraklion - The largest Cretan city
The new year has arrived and it’s time to get a tan. We’ve all spent too long cooped up indoors opening presents and eating too much. Let’s get out there. There’s no better place to start than Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. It’s a scorching slab of Mediterranean sun, blue sea, and lush greenery that combines a very modern tourist infrastructure (lots of hotels and pools) with the best of Greek history. Crete is the ideal destination for travellers who like to spent one day poolside with a drink in hand and the next exploring the glorious ruins of an ancient labyrinth. Who knows? You might meet a Minotaur.
Heraklion
Crete is the most populated of all the Greek islands but most of the action takes place in the capital of Heraklion. Tear yourself awayand you can enjoy strolling around the remains of the old Venetian port, exploring the Byzantine St. Matthew of the Sinaites church, and pondering the ebb and flow of history at the basilica of St Titus. It used to be a mosque when Crete was under Ottoman occupation and before that was originally an early Christian church. When you’ve had enough history head down to the harbour in the evening. It looks stunning!!!
